This week’s topic for the weekly photo challenge by “The Daily Post“ is “Detail”.
I picked an image from my archive, showing the polished shell of a certain kind of sea-snail, the Haliotis, common name is abalone.
Below the ugly surface, you can find this wonderful subject.
Take care have a great weekend!
(as usual, you can see the photo enlarged, when clicking in it)
Love the colors! And what a wonderful macro of the finer details – 😉
🙂
thanks, Y.
How does one remove the outer surface? I was given an abalone shell just yesterday, and was going to give it a go.
I’m sorry, Maggie, I don’t know. We bought it polished. But, I guess, you have to use a dremel like tool to remove the outer layers. Next you have to polish the shell also with a dremel, but using a polish toot instead of a dental drill. Maybe a jewelry producer can help you. Here, you can buy many different gems based on fraction parts of the polished shell.
Interesting… I’ll have to see what I can come up with. Thank you for the information.
If you can do it, please drop me a note. I’m interested in seeing the results 🙂
Will do. 🙂
🙂
That is quite an array of colours. I love how the surface is shimmering and almost looks wet.
Thanks, Otto!
Such beautiful shells .. Have you ever eaten abalone?
No, never – I didn’t even know that they are edible.
But, yes, the shells are really beautiful.
Indeed, you can find treasures in a place, you would not expect 😉
🙂
Sure, nature has many surprises for us. Watch your feet. Don’t close your eyes.
Thanks, Awa!
i love the macro… how to do that?
I used a macro lens on my DSLR and a tripod. The tripod for not getting any blur from slightest movements of my camera during exposure and the macro lens from getting close enough.
