Throwback Thursday: Blood-moon 2019

On Monday early morning last week sun, earth and moon were lined up again. While crossing the shadow of earth the should vanish from the sky for some time. But, instead of vanishing you can see a descending moon during the time, when the moon is immersing in the shadow. Later, you can observe an ascending moon, while the moon is living the earth shadow. When the moon is completely in the shadow, you could guess, you were unable to see it. But, instead of seeing a moonless sky a full-moon, you can see a low-red glowing moon in the sky, where shortly before the full-moon was visible. In 2015 I took images of the pages and composed them into a single overview image. You can see it here in my blog, too. The long-wave red lights are able to surround the planet earth and touch the moon in the shadow of earth and illuminate it with this low red light. A wonderful experience, despite -8°C and getting up at 4:30 a.m.

This time, I didn’t take photos all night. Instead, I checked a location in advance for a single shot: blood-moon over the nightly landscape.

This was my 4th try for photographing a blood-moon. and I’m satisfied with the result. The first try was many years ago with very bad results. the camera was simply too bad for such a job. The second try was in 2015, as you can see here. The third try was in summer 2018, but there was a huge cloud field in front of the moon. So, I missed it. The next opportunity for middle Europe seems to be Dec.20th, 2029. I guess, we won’t see it here because of bad weather.

Take care!

Throwback Thursday: Blood-moon

Last Friday there was another opportunity to see a moon eclipse. Unfortunately, western Germany wasn’t in an optimal place for seeing the whole process.

  • Moon rise at 21:23
  • Sunset at 21:26
  • start of the lunar eclipse 21:30
  • maximum at 22:21

Many people were out for watching the event, but not all of them were lucky to see something. I wasn’t able to see a thing, too. I was faced with a moon-rise behind a dense layer of clouds, despite the stars standing higher above the horizon were visible. So, in my location the start of the process wasn’t visible because we’re too far west. Sunset was too late and a layer of clouds didn’t allow a view on the moon during the central part of the process. So, I went back home. At about 23:00 I was able to see the red moon when the moon already rose high enough to be above the cloud layer. But, at this time the reddish color already started to vanish. Bad luck.

Hoping for next time. On January 21st the times are better for us. But, probably the weather will be against us again.

till that, I still have the images from September 2015.

Take care!

Throwback Thursday: blood moon

Nowadays, everything changes quickly. The whole world is on constantly change and the changing rate increasing steadily.

Most people nowadays have a mobile or a cell phone. An enormous percentage of these people us a smartphone. While some people are happy with the default wallpaper images, there are lots of people changing them either by an image downloaded from an only wallpaper service or by an image taken by their own. Me, too! And, as a photographer, I certainly use one of my own images. But, I don’t change that image often. A few weeks ago I made the first change since I got my first smartphone in 2009! That background image moved with me from smartphone to smartphone until now.

Do you use the default image, one of the spare images of your smartphone manufacturer, an image taken from an online wallpaper service or one of your own images? Would you show it to the public? Mine is here 🙂

Take care!
