Monochrome Monday 8-37

Lovelocks. Lots of lovelocks. Literally tons of lovelocks. This bridge crossing river Rhine in Cologne is famous for carrying thousands of these locks. A couple of years ago, structural engineers came over to re-do the structural calculations because of the enormous extra weight the bridge has to carry. Although each lock weighs only a couple of grams, it sums up to tons because of the huge amount of locks mounted on the fences on both sides of the bridge over the whole span. Afterward, many, many locks were removed to secure the bridge. But, lovers filled up the cleared spaces quite fast.

The bridge is more than 400m long and nearly 30m broad. The longest span is nearly 170m to give room for the transport ships to pass below. Besides pedestrians, the bridge is used by more than 1200 trains per day. It’s one of the most important railway junctions here in Germany. You can find more details on Wikipedia, if interested.

I’m putting this topic up quite early. It’s about three weeks ’til Valentine’s day. So, take this as a reminder to prepare something for your darling. 😊

Take care!

Happy Valentines Day

610_2437_wI found this in Lisbon last year. Many people set up a small metal heart and hung it on the grids. It’s a variant of the love-locks mounted on so many bridges. On every trip I do, I find places with these locks labeled with names and dates. I’s always interesting to see how old some locks are or what kind of lock the couple has chosen to symbolize their (hopefully eternal) love. For those of you, not familiar with the idea of love-locks, jump to this post on Pont de l’ArchevĂȘchĂ© in Paris, where I explained the idea.

I already posted many of these love-locks. Unfortunately I forgot to label them all correctly or included the images in regular posts. But you can find many of them by following the tag lovelock.

Take care!

Weekly Photo Challenge – My treasure

20101019175455_0000-e_wToday we have Valentines day, a day to think of your beloved. Here in Germany we started to celebrate this a few decades ago. At first the flower shops were advertising to sell more flowers. Here we still have winter. Only very few flowers are blooming. So, flowers are expensive in this time. Even nowadays, when it is possible to get flowers from all parts of the world, the variety is still limited.

At the daily post, they asked the photographers to show treasure. What does it mean to me? In the context of Valentines day it means being with your beloved. Being in a wonderful place. Having time with and for each other. Keep you love young.

Take care!
